We've had an exciting few days with our butterflies! Last Wednesday we observed that the butterflies had laid eggs on an orange slice in the butterfly house. On Thursday when I went to take the orange slice out to put in an insect observing box to contain the caterpillars once they hatch. As I was doing this, I noticed there were eggs all over the side of the butterfly house. The side of the house is a net.... with small holes. When I came to school on Friday there were little caterpillars all in the butterfly house AND all over the table the butterfly house was sitting on. The holes of the net were small enough for the caterpillars to escape!!!
Carefully with a paint brush the eggs and caterpillars were brushed into the insect box. The butterfly house is now hanging outside of our classroom window!

We had another big day learning about Life Cycles!
First, the darkling beetles have emerged from the mealworm pupas!!!!
Second, some other second graders discovered some tadpoles in a mud puddle left behind because of the lawn mowers out on the play ground! Some of the tadpoles were carefully retrieved by a teacher for us to observe! They are incredibly small right now... about the size of the end of a pencil.
Yesterday the students started a group project learning about other life cycles. Each pair or group of three has a different creature to research. They're creating a poster about their life cycle and will present the life cycle to the class. I'll photograph their posters once the project is complete!

The chrysalises emerged! I can sometimes see the proboscis when it is either drinking or just still. They have a hairy head thorax and abdomen. Our teacher put shuger in some water and stirred it and then put a circled sponge a little round container then poured on the shuger water. She also put it in the butterfly cage and another one so she put 2 in.

The caterpiller came out of the chrysalis and turned into a butterfly. The red stuff isn't blood, it is called meconium. Meconium is a liquid that comes out of the chrysalis. You might see the butterfly flapping so it can dry the meconium of it's wings. You might even see it driping of the butterflies wings. When you se the butterfly putting it's wings strait up, You won't be able to see color, your going to see brown like moths, but when the butterfly flaps it's wing to get ready to fly, you will be able to see orange and black, maybey green to. Our butterflies are called painted lady butterflies. They do look like monarch butterflies, but there not. The butterflies drink sugar water. Sometimes if you catch one and want to keep it, your going to have to put a sponge in a lid with sugar water for them to drnk because the sugar water tastes more like nectar from flowers. The butterflies antenna are long and thick with clubs at the end. The butterflies are climbing on top of the chrysalis. They have 4 wings instead of 2. 2 pairs 4 wings. The hed capsel came of the caterpiller.

What I see in this clear box is a chrysalis that's about to turn into a butterfly. But before it turned into a butterfly it practice making a j-shape.And when it was done with that it made a silk button. And it turned into a chrysalis and it waited and waited intill it turned into a butterfly. And it could have iny color on it to.It goes through the feidls and on a leif they lay some caterpillers and the cycle starts all over again.

I see the chrysalis is hanging as still as a statue. Another thing is that I see a wing of the painted lady butterfly.(colors are black & orange) The chrysalis also has the exoskeloten of the caterpillar and also the head capsule. The chrysalis has spikes. I don't know why the chrysalis has spikes. The chrysalis is shaking a little. The chrysalis(pupa)is shaped like a leaf. I measured my chrysalis I am observing and it is about 1and a half inches long. The pupa is hanging from it's silk button to stay on the lid of the cup.(Message: The pupa is not in the cup) If you look on the chrysalis top, you might see something like a caterpillar body. That is the abdomen of the butterfly. If you look in the middle of the chrysalis you might see the shape of a wing. That reminds you of the thorax of the painted lady butterfly. On the very bottom of the chrysalis is 2 circles. You can't see them clearly but you can see them at an angle. These are the compound eyes. The compound eyes remind you of the head of the painted lady butterfly. The chrysalis color without the wing color is a greenish brownish tannish color. The caterpillar isn't breathing inside the chrysalis while changes are coming. On the top of the chrysalis also is a stem looking thing that hooks on to the silk button so the chrysalis can stick on the cup lid. The caterpillar exoskeloten and the caterpillar head capsule hanging on the chrysalis, when you look at it you think that's wierd. The smell of the chrysalis is a scent like sand paper mixed with crushed corn. That is all I've gotta say.

Theres also two or one more thing you can OR will see in a chrilis like meconim it is a liqid that when the chrilis opens up for the butter-fly to get out and dry out it's wings so it can fly.The calseium sprays out! The last thing is the body. We have a pop-up butter-fly house for the panttid-lady butter-flys.
