Flat Stanley Goes To New York

Last Day In New York. Nov 29, 2008

Today was my last day in New York. We left our hotel in Nanuet and went over the Tapan Zee Bridge to Mamaronek.  We met up with Mrs. O'G's sister and took the train from Mamaronek to Manhattan to see the Broadway play Spamalot.  What a great show!!  While we were in the city we went by the New York Public Library and went shopping in the Hershey's Chocolate Store.  Did you know they had a 5 pound Hershey's chocolate bar that was bigger than me.  After the show we took the train back to Mamaronek and then went back to the Hotel.  We will be leaving very early tomorrow to head back to Raleigh. I sure have enjoyed my time in New York.  I hope you have enjoyed hearing about my adventures.

Visiting Friends. Friday, Nov 29, 2008

Today we checked out of our hotel in Manhattan.  Although we were leaving Manhattan we are not done with the adventures.  Today we went to visit a friend of Mr. O'G's in Shrub Oak, NY.  On our way out of Manhattan we crossed over the Macombs Dam Bridge into the Bronx.  Once over the bridge we saw where the old and new Yankee Stadiums were.  Shrub Oak, NY is about a 45 minute drive from Manhattan.  We spent the afternoon visiting and then went to a nice Mexican restaurant for dinner.  I had the Chicken Tacos.  After dinner we went to a pie shop and had dessert.  The place was called Grandma's Pies.  Everything was homemade.  I had the devils food strawberry shortcake, YUM!!  After dessert we headed to our new hotel in Nanuet.  It was a very relaxing day.  Tomorrow we go back into Manhattan for a Broadway Show.

Thanksgiving in New York, Nov 27,2008

 Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!  Today we watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.  It was very cold outside, but we were able to watch it from the 25th floor of our hotel.  It was pretty neat being that high up and being able to see all the floats, bands, and balloons coming down the street. The balloons were my favorite.  After the parade, we got some lunch at a local deli and then walked up to central park.  Central Park is this huge park in the middle of downtown Manhattan.  It is a beautiful park surrounded by these really tall buildings. We walked around the park for awhile and decided to get on the subway and go to lower Manhattan and see the financial district (Wall Street), and the World Trade Center site. The World Trade Center site is where the World Trade Center Twin Towers used to stand.    After walking around the financial area we caught the train back to our hotel to get ready to go to dinner.   

We went to dinner at the Metrazur Restaurant in the Grand Central Station Terminal.  This is a nice restaurant that overlooks the main terminal.  The food was delicious. The ceiling of the main terminal was painted with pictures of the constellations  After a very nice dinner we decided to walk over to Rockefeller Center and see the big Christmas Tree and the ice skating rink.  The line to get into the skating rink was very long so we didn't get to skate.  We then walked over to Times Square.  It was all lit up and there was a lot of people walking up and down the street. We even saw a light show set to music on the Saks 5th Avenue building. Overall it was a very busy and exciting day. New York! Nov 26, 2008

We finished up our drive in about 3 hours and decided to go see the Statue of Liberty.  We caught the Ferry at Liberty park in New Jersey, just across the river from Manhattan, NY.  We spent some time walking around the Ellis Island Immigration Museum while we waited for our next Ferry to take us to the actual Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island.  Seeing the Statue of Liberty was awesome! We walked up 156 stairs to the base of the Statue.   Visitors are not allowed to go into the actual Statue anymore, but it was pretty neat to be at the base of the Statue.  There is a neat picture in my photo album of the circular staircase that goes up into the actual statue.  We learned that in 1985 the Statue of Liberty went through extensive repairs.  During these repairs the original torch was removed and place on display in the museum.  The museum was very interesting and talked about how the statue was designed and built. 

Once we left Liberty Park we went through the Holland Tunnel to get to Manhattan, NY.  The Holland Tunnel actually goes under the Hudson River.  Traffic was pretty crazy in Manhattan, but we finally managed to get to our hotel.  Our Hotel is located in the Times Square area of Manhattan.  This is the same area where New York has it's big New Years Eve Celebration.   We went to a New York pizza place a few blocks away from the hotel for dinner.  The pizza  was fantastic.   We came back to the hotel and played some cards.  Tomorrow we will be watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  The parade is going to be coming down the street in front of our hotel.  Well I have a busy day tomorrow so it is time to get some sleep. The Drive: Nov 25, 2008

We left about 4:00 pm on Tuesday.  It was decided that we would drive about 6 or 7 hours and then get a hotel for the evening and finish our trip on Wednesday.  We stopped for dinner in Fredricksburg, Virgina.  The drive was pretty uneventful.  I did some reading and definitely took a nap.  So far we have driven through North Carolina, Virgina, Washington DC, and Maryland.   We stopped for the night in Elkton, Maryland, which is only a few miles from Delaware border.  There really hasn't been much to see, mainly because it was dark.  As we were crossing the Potomac River in Washington DC, we did see the Washington Monument in the distance. Did you know that at night the Washington Monument has a big red light on top of it. It was pretty dark so I was not able to get a picture.  Maybe I will be able to see it better on our way home.  We also went through the Fort McHenry Tunnel, which goes under the edge of the Chesapeake Bay.  The tunnel was outside of Baltimore Maryland.  Well I am off to get some breakfast and then back in the car for the last 3 hours of our trip.  I am hoping to see the Statue of Liberty today.

Getting Ready for the Trip: Nov 24, 2008

Today was a very busy day.  There were so many things that needed to be taken care of before we leave tomorrow.  Things like, watering the plants, cleaning the house, doing laundry, packing etc.  I had so many things to pack I had to make a list so I wouldn't forget anything.  I checked the weather and found out that it was really going to be cold.  It was only going to be in the mid 40's all week.  Mrs. O'G will have to wear long pants instead of shorts this week.  I made sure to pack my hat, big coat, gloves and scarf.  I also packed my umbrella because it might rain while we are there.  It is going to be a 10 hour drive to get to New York, so  I packed a book, a deck of cards, some movies, and a pillow.  Time seems to go faster when you take a nap.  I sure hope there will be snacks in the car.  Well it has been a long day and I need my rest.  Please check back tomorrow to see how the drive is going.
